Walking Therapy in Cheam and Epsom

Walking through a park in Cheam Epsom

Walking therapy combines traditional talking therapy with a gentle walk through a park environment based in the Cheam / Epsom area. There are a huge number of benefits to this:

  1. Walking side by side removes the constant direct eye contact of being sat face to face, which for some people can be overwhelming (in particular, but not limited to, people who are neurodiverse)

  2. Physical movement acts as a nervous system regulator and can help to feel like you are clearing emotional stress

  3. Movement also helps us to process; especially for those who find it difficult to concentrate whilst sitting still

  4. It’s good for our hearts AND our brains - Natural surroundings are shown to lower cortisol and release endorphins

I have completed specific walking therapy training, and before we begin I will share information with you about where the route takes place. I walk the same route each week so that you have a sense of predictability and develop familiarity with the environment.

FAQs

How do you manage confidentiality during walking therapy?

  • During walking therapy there is always the possibility that other people will be walking close enough to overhear us. If I am talking, I will cease until we have passed any members of the public. If you are talking, it is up to you whether you wish to stop until members of the public are out of earshot, or whether you wish to continue.

What happens if we bump into someone you / I know?

  • If another person greets me with a hello or similar, I will return the greeting. Again, it is up to you if you wish to do the same or stay silent.

Do you walk through all weathers?

  • I will continue even in the rain unless weather warnings have been issued which would make it unsafe to do so. In these circumstances we will arrange to meet at an alternative location. Make sure you wear clothing suitable for the environment / weather.

What if I have hayfever or a fear of dogs?

  • If you have any allergies (e.g. hayfever) or phobias (e.g. dogs) please make sure I am aware of this and we can discuss how you would like to manage this.
